Carrs Pasties is a family run bakery based in Bolton that has been baking perfect pasties since 1938. The company is constantly seeking to improve its customers experience and were in desperate need to open a new, larger retail outlet to sell its pasties and other freshly baked products to the public. The existing shop in front of the bakery being far too small, with customers often queuing outside in the lovely Bolton 'sunshine'.
The ChallengeFinding a suitable location was a challenge, until the adjacent 'Big Wash' closed. The well-known car wash on Manchester Road, directly next to their Bakery was an ideal location, but how do you turn a car wash into a pastie shop?
The SolutionDavid built the design team, interviewing local Architects to find the right person and bringing in a Structural Engineer and Service Consultant. Carrs Pasties brief was for maximised front of house shop space, walk in freezer, space for ovens and carparking.
David provided a full range of services, Project Management, Quantity Surveying and Contract Administration. David consulted with the client to establish a firm brief and communicated this to the design team and the contractor throughout the project, offering clear, honest and professional advice and ensuring the client’s brief was achieved.
The project involved partially demolishing the existing car wash and extending the front to form the retail space, with a modern design and a light spacious interior. The new unit has a large, glazed facade, bespoke counters with ambient and heated display areas, ovens, walk in freezer and a carpark to the rear plus a customer collections area. New cladding replaced the original to suit Carrs Pasties image. The project also included mechanical and electrical installations, landscaping, paving and signage.
The Result The project completed within budget and on programme. The result has been a magnificent success; sales have increased well beyond Carrs Pasties expectations and provided a more visible offering to passing trade. The company are delighted with the outcome of the project. Please see the Testimonial from Mr J Carr. David has established a good working relationship and has gone on to carry out more projects for Carrs Pasties.

Heysham Business Park is a strategic employment site located near Heysham’s port and power station in Lancashire, UK. The site was formerly used to produce aviation fuel works during the second world war. AMA FIC Ltd has a vision to transform the site into a high-quality employment park that will attract new businesses and create jobs in the area.
The ChallengeOver the years the Business Park has become largely dilapidated and underutilised, being a hotspot for fly tipping and antisocial behaviour. AMA FIC’s vision is to create a high-quality employment park and attract premium businesses to the area. Existing tenants had become angered with a lack of investment in the business park from previous owners with regular flooding and rubbish scattered across the site.
The SolutionTo achieve this vision, AMA FIC Ltd appointed DBQSS to provide project management and quantity surveying services. We have engaged with local business to carry out various projects such as - new entrance barrier with site wide CCTV and lighting - site wide drainage maintenance and mapping - demolition - refurbishment - recladding works - infrastructure investigations - road construction - waste removal - forming new secure compounds.
We have carried out a full scope of services for over 25 separate projects and feasibility studies to date.
Whilst there remains a large amount of work still to complete, the improvements carried out so far have made a significant difference in the look and feel of the business park. DBQSS have delivered high quality results that more than met the expectations and requirements of all the stakeholders involved. We have established strong and collaborative relationship with the client team, contractors, other consultants and established good relationships with the existing tenants providing clear communication about ongoing works which has helped forge new positive relationships between the owner and tenants.
It is proven that DBQSS have contributed to the vision and objectives of the client. I have a genuine interest in the success of this project and am committed to providing reliable services based on trust to build new and continue strengthening existing relationships.
